Presentation

Just One is a cooperative word-guessing game. Players work together to help the active player guess a Mystery word by each writing a one-word clue. But there is a twist: identical clues are cancelled before the active player sees them, encouraging players to find clues that are both helpful and original.

Accessibility features

  • Fully cooperative gameplay removes direct competition between players: everyone works toward the same score and celebrates successfully guessed words together.
  • Large, light game material, easy to grip, handle and place, supporting players who may experience difficulties with fine motor skills or dexterity.
  • Colourblind friendly: Game information does not rely on color alone, helping players distinguish key elements.
  • No time pressure: Players can observe, think and act at their own pace.

Skills engaged

Just One demands to create an effective clue, by retrieving relevant words and anticipating what their teammates might write, since identical clues are removed. The guesser then combines several different semantic cues to identify the mystery word. This engages:

  • Cognitive flexibility and creativity: Players explore different associations to generate relevant yet original clues. They must shift between possible ideas and select the most effective one that may not be duplicated and cancelled. This process combines creative thinking with reasoning and decision-making.
  • Reading and writing: Players formulate and write clues, while the guesser reads and interprets the remaining words to identify the mystery word. These activities involve written language production, word recognition, and comprehension.
  • General knowledge and perspective-taking: As supporting skills, general semantic knowledge helps players retrieve word meanings and explore associations between concepts. Perspective-taking helps them anticipate which clues their teammates are likely to understand or produce, balancing meaningful associations with the need to avoid duplicate clues.

Scientific note

Research by Liam Cross and Gray Atherton highlights how multiplayer board games can engage communication, perspective-taking and shared attention. Their later research also suggests that the structured nature of board-game play can provide a supportive framework for social interaction, although Just One itself was not specifically studied.

Just One brings many of these characteristics together through its gameplay. Its cooperative structure gives players a shared goal rather than putting them in direct competition, while creating natural opportunities to communicate, interpret other players’ perspectives and build on a common understanding. Clues can also be adapted to different vocabulary and communication abilities, making it easier to adjust the experience to the players around the table.
