Match Madness
Match Madness challenges players to recreate visual patterns as quickly and accurately as possible using five playing blocks.
Presentation
Match Madness is a fast-paced visual pattern-matching game. Players use five blocks to recreate the pattern shown on a card. The first player to correctly reproduce the pattern wins the card. The game includes five levels of difficulty, allowing players to progressively tackle more complex patterns.
Solo mode: Not available

Accessibility features
- Large, light blocks, easy to grip, handle and place, supporting players who may experience difficulties with fine motor skills or dexterity.
- High visual contrast reduce visual complexity and make the symbols easier to see, distinguish and identify.
- Progressive difficulty: Pattern cards are divided into five levels of difficulty, allowing the visual challenge to increase progressively.
- Hands-on gameplay: Players manipulate physical blocks to reproduce patterns, offering a tactile and visually structured way to engage with the challenge.
- Short, clearly defined rounds: Each round focuses on a single pattern, with immediate visual feedback when players compare their configuration with the card.
- Simple rules make it quick to understand and easy to get into the game, while reducing the amount of information players need to remember.
- Colourblind friendly: Game information does not rely on color alone, helping players distinguish key elements.
- No reading required: Players can enjoy the game without needing to be able to read or understand written text.
Skills engaged
Match Madness relies on rapidly analysing a visual pattern and reproducing it through the spatial manipulation of physical blocks. This combination engages:
- Selective attention: Players scan the pattern card to identify relevant visual information and compare it with their blocks. It helps them focus on the features needed to complete the challenge.
- Visual recognition and spatial orientation: As supporting skills, visual recognition helps players distinguish colours, shapes and patterns, while spatial orientation helps them understand the positions and orientations of the blocks.
- Reasoning and problem-solving: Players determine how to reproduce a two-dimensional pattern using physical blocks. They explore possible combinations and adjust their strategy to find the correct configuration.
- Object manipulation: Players handle, rotate and arrange blocks to recreate the target pattern. These actions involve hand-eye coordination and fine motor control to position the blocks accurately.

Scientific note
A literature review has demonstrated positive associations between interventions based on traditional board games, such as chess or Go, and cognitive functions, such as attention, working memory, and adaptive skills (executive functions), although Match Madness itself has not been specifically studied (Noda et al., 2019)
